GATE Exam, How To Change The Branch in M. Tech

Chandigarh: Many students get bored of studying the same branch of engineering they were in.  There are several students who also think that they might do better with their academics if they could change their branch in M. Tech.  Most of the students post the question that, can they change their branch from Electrical or Mechanical to Computers or Electronics.


Well, yes, one can change their branch in M. Tech but the applicant would have to study for the subject that you want to opt for M. Tech. The entrance exams are conducted for admission in M.Tech you would have to prepare for the subject you are opting for. The student would be able to apply to IIT with fewer GATE scores, as most of the students will be applying for their core subjects and the students with lesser score will be able to apply for other core departments.


To seek admission in some of the branches a valid GATE score  in the department that they want to change. For ex: if you are from Mechanical engineering to Information Technology in Mtech, the applicant needs to have a valid gate score in IT and computer stream. While the eligibility criteria differ from institute to institute most of the criteria are same in all the institutes.   


For Civil Engineering in M. Tech other than the civil engineering branch architecture, other disciplines in Technology or Engineering, other disciplines in Science is eligible. The Gate paper must be civil Engineering.


For Aerospace Engineering at M. Tech almost all the branches of engineering are eligible. The Gate paper must be Civil Engineering or Aerospace Engineering  or Mechanical Engineering.


For Chemical Engineering at M. Tech other than chemical engineering branch the Biochemical, environmental and civil Engg or other disciplines in technology and Engg  or other disciplines in Science is eligible. The Gate paper must be Chemical Engineering.
